Hillier Farmhouse Renovation
This project entailed a full gut and transformation of a quaint 1800s farmhouse nestled in Prince Edward County. Throughout the renovation, we encountered two primary challenges: the limited 500 square foot footprint and the northern orientation, which left the existing interior house cast in darkness. GRAD's objective was to defy these natural constraints and craft a luminous, calm and expansive home.
To address the issue of limited sunlight, we ingeniously incorporated a double-height space above the entrance, functioning as a "light well." This architectural feature floods both the first and second floors with abundant southern sunshine, counteracting the potential gloominess of the northern exposure. Recognizing that a conventional staircase would consume valuable square footage and obstruct light within the light well, we opted for a bespoke steel spiral staircase. Its sleek design allows light to permeate through, illuminating the entirety of the dwelling.
The end result is a stunning, ethereal home exuding tranquility and sophistication. From dawn till dusk, and through every season, natural light dances gracefully throughout the interior, imbuing the space with an enduring sense of serenity.
